Our K-9 Unit is a specialized team of security officers who use service dogs to perform their duty responsibilities . In addition to their usual duties, each K-9 officer is also a dog handler, tasked with the responsibly to train and care for their canine partner.
The duties that our K-9 officer and K-9 partner perform together can be divided into two groups:
General Security Officer Duties: The dog accompanies the handler and they perform the task of protecting and securing together. The officer does the talking. The K-9 does the barking. Together they apprehend.
Specialized Tasks: The K-9 Unit is also Certified in specific jobs, where the dog is performing the lead role. Those tasks may include: the expert detection of illegal substances, chemicals or explosives; the tracking and apprehension of trespassers on private property; search and rescue (SAR) of kidnapped or missing person; locate buried bodies or body parts; and bedbug detection.
Each K-9 and Handler must maintain the ability to perform their duties with excellence.
